Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on a three-lift sequence that includes squat, bench press, and deadlift. It is not about simply throwing some heavy weight around. Instead, it is about learning safety by way of excellent technique -- how to perform the move correctly -- and then growing your strength slowly and steadily. This type of training doesn't happen in one season, either. It is about remaining involved year-round. If you do this, you can gain tremendous health benefits beyond physical strength that include mental discipline, nutrition, periodization, physiology, biomechanics, and teamwork, which can all contribute to a longer and more productive life.
While the end goal of powerlifting is to win by lifting as much weight as possible, it is not that simple-minded. We use strategy to optimize performance during competition, and that starts with proper management of our strength training, nutrition, and recovery in the regular training. This injects strength, endurance, and stability into the other facets of your life, including other sports that you may participate in.
What's the best part about the sport of powerlifting? ANY PERSON CAN DO IT. There is no specific shape or size. Instead, you compete by weight classes. What you DO need is a positive attitude, a good heart, and a desire to work hard to be the best you individually can be.
Oh, and by the way, the BHS Powerlifting Team LOVES picking up heavy things and putting them back down.
