Practices
All practices will be held at Steelwood Lanes in Morgan City. Practices days/times Tuesdays and Wednesdays,3:30-5:00. On occasion, we may schedule a practice at Creole Lanes in Houma. This is so our bowlers have an opportunity to bowl at a different house in preparation for District, Bi-Regional, State, etc.
You will always compete the way you practice. Use practice as an opportunity to learn from coaches, others on the team and to improve as the season continues. Most of our bowling team members began bowling through the local youth leagues. These leagues are approved by the LHSAA, allowing you more opportunities to improve as an individual and compete against others throughout the area. You do not have to become a member of the youth league to be a member of the Panther Bowling Team.
Attendance is mandatory for each practice! If there is a conflict, you must notify one of the coaches as soon as you know of that conflict. Attendance at school will affect eligibility to practice or participate in a jamboree, scrimmage, or regular season/playoff match.
Student Athlete Responsibility
There will be particular games when the bowling team will be dismissed from school early. Each student is responsible for communicating to that teacher regarding their absence. Students are responsible for making up all quizzes, tests, assignments, projects, etc. You must remain academically eligible (see student handbook)
Cell Phone/Electronic devices/Game and practice etiquette
Cell phones and any other electronic devices are not be used at any time during practice, scrimmage, jamboree or matches. All devices must be turned off prior to the start of any practice or match. Use of any electronic device during a match will result in disqualification for you and possibly the team. Under LHSAA and team rules, parents are not allowed to interact with their child in any way (talking to, attempting to coach, etc) during matches or practice. If this is observed, parents will be asked to leave.
Games/Matches
Home games/matches will be played at Steelwood Lanes in Morgan City. Away games will be played elsewhere as listed on our schedule. When we receive the schedule, we will post as soon as possible to the school website under the Bowling tab.
Equipment
If you have your own equipment, make sure you bring it with you to every game. If you do not own equipment, house balls can be used, and shoes are available at the front counter of every bowling center. There is no charge for the use of bowling center balls or shoes for LHSAA sanctioned practices and games.
Game Uniforms
Every player must purchase black slacks (available at Joe’s Boots…ask for the BHS Band slacks; no stretch pants, capri, or skinny jeans is allowed), along with the bowling team shirt. Matching uniforms must be worn by all teams. Students not in full uniform will not be allowed to participate in the game.
Sports Letters (from the student handbook)
Coaches in each sport will have their own criteria for what constitutes a letter in their sport. In general, an athlete must be a member of the varsity team in good standing to receive a letter. Athletes that do not letter will receive a participation certificate.
Letter Jackets (from the student handbook)
Any athlete who has played the same varsity sport for two years and letters one of those years will be eligible to receive a jacket at the beginning of their junior year.
Patches (from the student handbook)
Patches will be awarded to athletes who earn the following honors:
- 1st Team All District
- 1st Team All State
- 1st Team All Parish
- 1st Team Academic All State
- 1st Team Academic All District
A patch will be awarded to each member of a team that wins a district championship. A state patch will be awarded to each member of a team that advances beyond the regional round of post season play.
Athletes who earn 2nd team honors or honorable mention honors may purchase these patches for $10.
Quit Rule (from the student handbook)
It will be the policy of the BHS Athletic Department that if an athlete does not complete a particular sport season for any reason (quits the team or is dismissed by the coach), that athlete is not eligible to compete in another sport until the previous sport season is completed. The only exception to this policy will be if the coach and/or Athletic Director sign off.
Example: If an athlete quits the football team, he cannot play (or practice) basketball until the last football game is played.
Academic Eligibility (from the student handbook)
Athletes must pass 6 subjects for the year to be eligible to play fall sports. To be eligible for spring sports, an athlete must pass 6 classes in the fall semester. A 1.5 GPA must be maintained.
Attendance policy (from the student handbook)
Athletes must be at school the last half of the day (5th period through 7th period) to participate in practice or a game that day. Athletes must be at school on Friday to attend Saturday or Sunday events. If the athlete misses school because of a doctor appointment, a doctor’s excuse must be provided to the coach.
Coach/Parent Relationship
Thank you for encouraging and allowing your child to participate in BHS athletics. Our goal as coaches is to provide as many opportunities for positively representing Berwick High School, team improvement, individual success, and just as equally important, life skills such as responsibility and coping skills, as much as possible. We encourage our parents to attend all matches.
During a match, game or practice players are to remain in the pit area of the concourse, unless to use the restroom. Players are not allowed to talk with parents during the practice or game. If this occurs during a match, individual players or the team can be disqualified and must forfeit that match. Any and all discussion regarding player performance during a game/match occurs between the player and coach only. If anyone other than a Berwick High School Coach is observed coaching a player, they will be asked to leave and that student will be pulled immediately from the game, no matter what frame.
Bowling is a unique sport because equal emphasis is placed on the team and the individual. This is not set forth by the coaching staff, but the sport of bowling itself. In a team setting, students will compete for individual score and a team score. Players may or may not rotate in or out after each game. If a certain group of players are left in or pulled after a game, it is for a specific reason. This is a team and individual sport. No student is guaranteed to play in every game of every match.
Again, thank you for allowing your child to participate in Berwick High School Athletics! We look forward to another great year!!
